Project description
The project included maintenance and repairs to the M1 overpass bridge (double decker bridges) between Carr Street and Anderson Street in the Johannesburg city centre.
Project objectives
The bridge was exhibiting structural defects, including a cracked road surface, damaged and stolen bridge parapets and failing structural support elements. The drainage system was blocked and damaged and there were missing road signs. The objective of the project was to rehabilitate all the defects and extend its service life.
Project benefits
The bridge drainage system was improved in response to the returning floods experienced on the double decker bridge. Other benefits included faster draining of water from the bridge and in improved riding surface quality.
Employment created
Local labourers benefited through employment, skills transfer and improved living standards. A total of 90 local employees from two affected wards were employed on the project.
Training
Ten local SMEs were appointed and more than 40% of the scope of work was subcontracted, which empowered the SMEs with employment and skills transfer.
Training was provided by an accredited trainer and included HIV awareness training, SHE Rep training, awareness training, Working on Heights training, application of Sika products, and training on the use and maintenance of power hand tools.
