Passionate about paving the way for the youth
Calliper is passionate about paving the way for young students. We take pride in assisting students who are in need of practical training in order for them to graduate. We mentor, prepare and give them work experience to help enable them to fulfil their dream of becoming engineers. This year three young student engineers from Wits University have joined our team. This is what they had to say about their experience so far:
Liyabonga Sogayise, BSc (Eng.): Civil student
I received a warm welcome from their amazing diverse team, full of humility. This opportunity has helped me enhance my understanding of the civil engineering profession and its practice outside the lecture room. As a student working under the mentorship and supervision of experienced engineers and technologists, I get to appreciate a great deal of technical knowledge, professionalism and acceptable civil engineering conduct. I believe that my time here will allow me to build an attitude of excellence, improve my skill set, and help me adopt good workmanship. I’m looking forward to contributing towards the team goals and upholding the vision and mission.
Marcus Nkosi, BSc (Eng.): Civil student
As a student being at Calliper has been an amazing experience. I am finally seeing the transition from class to the workplace. It gives me motivation when I’m sitting next to civil engineers since it has always been my dream to become a civil engineer. When I see their staff happy and always willing to explain projects they are working on, it makes me feel welcomed and gives me hope that one day I will become a civil engineer.
Being here makes me appreciate everything that we are taught in class because everything from transportation, hydrology, geotechnical, structures and design keeps coming up.
I am learning that integrity, professionalism, time management, teamwork, and most importantly creativity is what makes a good engineer. I thank all the staff of Calliper for having us. It is a great honour to be exposed to this big pool of knowledge.
Nkosinathi Jwara, BSc (Eng.): Civil student
The environment here feels so relaxed thanks to the neat layout of all the furniture and the workstations and that help you get whatever anxiety or stress you might be having out of the way. Let alone the people who make it being really fun with their upbeat and good-humoured personalities. Everyone here is so cheerful.
But above all, I found what I expected here at Calliper. I appreciate that at Calliper you’re being put at the frontline and made to feel like you’re an actual engineer, boosting confidence and fostering an engineering common sense from other engineers around. There is a strong engineering experience exhibited by the engineers who we all interact with daily. This makes me proud to be part of such a well-established company in the civil engineering industry. We have already been to site and partaken in different projects and all of it has been a nice learning experience and not overwhelming.
I am so grateful for the pleasant treatment we have received from everyone at Calliper and the hospitality all round. It has been easy to integrate.
